I have always to tell my pupils that they must raise their fingers very high for all the gracenotes and embelishments to play them accurate and clean.
Joseph MacDonald in his treatise from 1760 already tells:
"The Movement of each Finger must be as high as Possible, that they may return with greater Force, For true Pipe Musick, depending Chiefly on the Disposition & Execution of the Fingers, must be so performd, with all the Strenght as well as agility of the Fingers, to make it well playd." (R. D. Cannon: "Joseph MacDonald's Compleat Therory of the Scots Highland Bagpipe", 1994).
